About The Artist
Raymond Mitchell Perusina Jr. paints under the moniker JR Mitchell (suffix and middle
name). Born in northern California, Raymond lived in San Francisco and Los Angeles before
moving to Palm Springs. He studied business administration at City College of San Francisco
and acting at Studio A.C.T. (American Conservatory Theater) in San Franciso and the Loft
Studio and Sherwood Oaks Film School in Los Angeles. Raymond turned to art after
abandoning Hollywood movie aspirations. An artist friend encouraged him to paint and offered studio space to get started.
Raymond describes his work as abstract, but quirky. His first major work, Full House (2014),
depicts a theater stage with an aspiring actor (Raymond, maybe) waiting in the wings. Bibi’s
Wedding (2015), also theatrical, tells a love story with a cast of characters encircling a blue
truck, a man’s legs protruding from under a stage curtain and a knife, maybe real or fake,
lying on a table. An early work, Hashtag Series (2014), comprises 62 small oil paintings on
paper mounted on four wood platforms. Hashtag includes portraits, caricatures, landscapes
and abstract images—categories that define Raymond’s art today. Although Raymond’s
work includes large canvases, his preferred format is small scale oil on paper.
